Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) for Neurological Conditions

If you have difficulty walking due to stroke, multiple sclerosis, brain injury, incomplete spinal cord injury or other neurological conditions you might be a candidate for this assistive walking device. We have trained Physiotherapists who offer comprehensive evaluation, fitting and follow up for the Odstock® Dropped Foot Stimulator.

Function Electrical Stimulation (FES) can help patients who have a dropped foot due to upper motor neuron lesions. Such conditions would include:

  • Stroke

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

  • Spinal cord injuries (T12 and above)

  • Parkinson's Disease (PD)

  • Cerebral Palsy (CP)

  • Hereditary spastic paraparesis

The Odstock® Dropped Foot Stimulator applies small electrical pulses to the common peroneal nerve through skin-surface electrodes, producing dorsiflexion and eversion, lifting the foot in swing and stabilizing the ankle when it is returned to the ground.

Use of the Odstock® Dropped Foot Stimulator has been shown to:

  • Reduce the effort of walking

  • Increase speed of walking

  • Improve confidence and independence

  • Reduce tripping and falling

  • Improve quality of life
