Pelvic Health Physiotherapy:  Things to Think About... 

Probably you have heard about pelvic floor physiotherapy for urinary incontinence, or you heard mainly about a solo exercise called Kegels. There is more to pelvic floor physiotherapy than kegels. 

With the many muscles we have in our pelvic floor, an exercise program can definitely be more than one kind of exercise. Did you know that isolating the different muscles when exercising gives a better outcome. And although it may sound counterintuitive, in certain conditions you may need ONLY to learn how to relax the pelvic floor rather than to tighten it.  

Pelvic floor physiotherapist treats and manages many more conditions than most of us would think.  Besides for different types of incontinence (stress, urge, mixed), when could you seek out the help from a pelvic floor physiotherapist? 

  • During pre- and post-partum:

helps preparing the muscles, and the pelvis for delivery, and helps them to recover faster afterwards. How? By keeping the muscles as flexible as possible, and by strengthening them as well as learning breathing exercises.

  • When you have chronic pelvic pain:  

Pelvic tension, and pain that can be caused or exacerbated by physical, and/or mental health problems.  Pain that lasts more than 3 months is classified as chronic pain and requires a different approach for successful treatment.  Chronic pain is generated mostly from the central pain system located in the brain, and not from the pelvis anymore.  Understanding how this central chronic pain system works and managing it through specific exercises is key to treating chronic pain successfully.
